DESCRIPTION
This course builds job-ready Quantity Surveying skills. Starting from drawings and measurement rules, you will perform quantity take-off, prepare Bills of Quantities (BOQ), build unit rates (labor, material, equipment, overheads, profit), and understand tendering, contracts, and basic cost control.
OBJECTIVES
- Read architectural/structural drawings and apply standard measurement rules (SMM/CESMM/NRM concepts).
- Take off quantities and record them in measurement sheets and abstracts.
- Prepare structured BOQs for common trades (earthworks, concrete, steel, masonry, finishes).
- Build unit rates via rate analysis and compile estimates with indirects and markups.
- Understand tendering, basic contract concepts (FIDIC overview), and variation handling.
- Use Excel templates and get introduced to QS software (CostX / PlanSwift / Cubicost – as applicable).
PREREQUISITES
Basic understanding of construction drawings is helpful. No prior QS experience required. Familiarity with Excel is recommended.

02 - DRAWINGS & MEASUREMENT BASICS
- Reading architectural & structural drawings
- Measurement rules (SMM/CESMM/NRM concepts)
- Measurement sheets & abstract sheets
03 - BILL OF QUANTITIES (BOQ)
- BOQ structure and item coding
- Earthworks, concrete, reinforcement, masonry, finishes
- Manual vs. software-assisted BOQ preparation
04 - ESTIMATION & RATE ANALYSIS
- Direct & indirect costs; overheads & profit
- Unit rate build-up: labor, material, equipment
- Worked examples for common trades
05 - TENDERING & CONTRACTS
- Tender documents and bidding process
- Pre-/post-tender estimation; contingencies & escalation
- Contract basics and FIDIC overview; variations & claims
06 - QS SOFTWARE & EXCEL TEMPLATES
- Excel for BOQ & rate analysis: templates and formulas
- Introduction to QS tools: CostX / PlanSwift / Cubicost*
- Optional linkage with scheduling tools for cost control

07 - FINAL CASE STUDY PROJECT
- Prepare BOQ and quantity take-off for a small residential building
- Complete unit rate build-up and summary estimate
- Deliverables: BOQ, rate analysis sheets, and tender summary
