2D → 3D AI Tools & Workflows
Learn how to convert sketches, scanned drawings, and photos into usable 3D geometry. This course focuses on exporting AI-generated models to
OBJ/FBX/GLTF and integrating them into AutoCAD, 3ds Max, and Revit.
Who Is This For?
- Architects, interior designers, visualizers, and educators.
- AutoCAD/3ds Max/Revit users who want faster concept modeling.
- Anyone needing sketch/image → 3D starting points for further refinement.
Learning Outcomes
- Generate 3D meshes from single sketches or images.
- Capture real objects with photogrammetry and clean the output.
- Export and import models into AutoCAD, 3ds Max, and Revit reliably.
- Retopology, smoothing, and CAD/BIM-friendly cleanup best practices.
Meshy.ai – Sketch/Image → 3D (Suggested: 6 hours)
Meshy converts a single image or sketch into a watertight mesh, with controls for topology and texturing.
- Inputs & prompts for furniture/façade elements.
- Remeshing & polygon count control for downstream use.
- Export: OBJ, FBX, GLTF → import to AutoCAD/3ds Max/Revit.
- Exercise: Sketch a table or mashrabiya tile → generate → retopo in 3ds Max.
Scan2CAD – Raster/Image → DXF/DWG Polylines (Suggested: 3 hours)
Scan2CAD converts scanned drawings, logos, and high-contrast patterns (e.g., mashrabiya/arabesque tiles) into clean DXF/DWG polylines for AutoCAD. Ideal when you need editable linework rather than a mesh.
- Vectorization modes: Outline, Centerline, and OCR for text.
- Cleanup controls: threshold, despeckle, gap fill, arc/line fitting, and polyline simplification to reduce nodes.
- Export: DXF/DWG/SVG; layer and color mapping for CAD standards.
- Use cases: ornamental grills, façade motifs, scanned details, furniture contours for precise CAD redraw.
Mini-Workflow
- Prepare a high-contrast black-on-white image (PNG/JPG). Crop to the tile/shape you need.
- Import to Scan2CAD → choose Vectorize → start with Outline for silhouettes or Centerline for strokes.
- Tune Threshold, enable Reduce Speckle, and Shape Fitting (lines/arcs) → Preview.
- Export as DXF → open in AutoCAD → run
OVERKILL and PEDIT > JOIN → scale and array as blocks.
Exercise
Convert an oriental window pattern into a single clean polyline tile, save as a block, and create a rectangular and polar array. Deliver a DWG with layers (Pattern, Frame) and a plotted PDF.
Tip: For filled shapes, choose Outline. For line drawings, try Centerline. If curves look faceted, increase arc fitting or smooth later with PEDIT > Spline.
Luma AI – Single-Image/Video to 3D (Suggested: 4 hours)
Luma creates 3D from a single image or short video capture (NeRF/GS). Great for quick concept assets and product forms.
- Capture tips: lighting, parallax, backgrounds.
- Export meshes & textures; limitations vs CAD solids.
- Exercise: Capture a chair with a phone → export → render in 3ds Max.
Kaedim (Service Pipeline) (Suggested: 3 hours)
Kaedim provides a managed service: you supply refs or concept art, they return a cleaned mesh suitable for DCC apps.
- When to use a service vs DIY generation.
- Deliverables, license, and revision loops.
- Exercise: Submit a complex prop; compare with Meshy output.
Photogrammetry (Kiri / Polycam) (Suggested: 6 hours)
For real objects and site artifacts, photogrammetry turns multiple photos into accurate 3D meshes.
- Shooting workflow (turntable vs walk-around).
- Reconstruction settings, decimation, texture bakes.
- Export to OBJ/FBX → retopo in 3ds Max → Revit family wrapping.
- Exercise: Scan a decor element → create a clean, lightweight asset.
AutoCAD / 3ds Max / Revit Integration (Suggested: 5 hours)
- AutoCAD: Import OBJ/FBX → scale →
PEDIT/OVERKILL cleanup → arrays/blocks for patterns.
- 3ds Max: Retopology, smoothing groups, UV unwrap → materials (V-Ray/Corona) → render.
- Revit: Import to Mass/Furniture family → set categories & materials → replace with native forms where precision is needed.
- Deliverable templates: scene units, naming, LOD, and file size targets.
Quality & Ethics
- Attribution & licensing for reference images.
- Client approvals: clearly mark AI-assisted concept vs. CD-grade geometry.
- Performance budget: polygon limits for BIM and real-time apps.
Final Project
Create a themed interior prop set (e.g., oriental window + table + lamp):
- One asset from a sketch (Meshy), one from a single photo/video (Luma), one via photogrammetry.
- Retopo and import into 3ds Max for texturing and rendering.
- Wrap a hero asset as a Revit family and place it in a sample room.
