This course deconstructs the process of creating a video composition into a few simplified steps. The rich content includes concept art and composition discussions, and a rigorous workflow pipeline between 5 different CGI Programs. By the end the student will master the step by step workflow to create any similar asset or composition.

The course will cover five software: Maya, Xnormals, Marmoset Toolbag, Substance Painter, After effects.


Animators, graphic designers, motion graphics artists, art directors, artists and anyone who is interested in creating 3D images and animations.


This course has been designed to allow students the option of taking it either before, after, or concurrently with Autodesk Maya Levels 1 & 2.

01 - Concept Art

  • Gathering photo references
  • Photo bashing in photoshop

02 - Introduction to Xnormals

  • Establishing relationship between high and low poly
  • Using cages to average out normal
  • Producing Normal and AO maps in Xnormals

03 - Introduction to Marmoset Toolbag

  • Importing high/low/cage models to Marmoset
  • Previewing the bake results
  • Baking in Marmoset
  • Fixing Skewing errors in our bakes

04 - Modelling in Maya

  • Creating a quick and rough Block out
  • Modelling the High Poly model
  • Decimating the model into a Low Poly
  • Unwrapping the Low Poly

05 - Backing in Xnormals

  • Importing the high / Low/ Cage poly models

06 - Introduction to Substance Painter

  • Importing the low poly model and testing the baked maps
